Newsweek’s ‘25 New Ivies’

Newsweek is releasing an article in their upcoming edition called 25 New Ivies that draws on its college guide lists. In general, I am skeptical about how much the opinions of guidebook publishers have to do with actual feelings within the market. However, it never hurts to have a look at the competition to see what, if anything, they’re doing online to deserve the crown of laurel.

Here’s the list for your clicking convenience:

Boston College
Bowdoin College
Carnegie Mellon (won the CASE gold award for their site–very slick Flash)
Claremont Colleges: Harvey Mudd and Pomona
Colby College
Colgate University (I’ve recognized them before for having a pretty nice site)
Davidson College
Emory University
Kenyon College
Macalester College
University of Michigan
New York University
University of North Carolina Chapel Hill
University of Notre Dame
Olin College of Engineering
Reed College (grrr…)
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute
Rice University
University of Rochester (these guys going to be around at HigherEdWebDev 2006?)
Skidmore College
Tufts University
University of California, Los Angeles
Vanderbilt University
University of Virginia
Washington University in St. Louis

    why “grrr” to Reed?

Reed and Warren Wilson share much the same market, although they are not our biggest competitor. They are roughly the same size as well, though their tuition is more than ours. I’d love to steal some of their applicants…

It’s kind of a good-natured sort of growl I suppose :) A little rivalry can be fun.
